Tour a 100 Year Old Cottage...she was mine for awhile :(

I always try to remind myself that in this life we own nothing. Everything is borrowed, to be enjoyed for a short or long while, eventually to be cast out, passed down or sold. I stumbled across some old pictures on my computer this evening. Pictures of the home Chris and I rented right after we got married. A really neat old cottage that had loads of charm and extras I wish I could have kept forever. But I had to move on and leave them for another renter to enjoy. Looking at these pictures is bittersweet. Sweet in that it was a young and carefree time in our lives when so much awaited us. No babies yet! No mortgage. All of that. But the bitter part is that I now live in a house that doesn't have the cool vintage charm of my first house. I feel like I'm constantly trying to add it on. I wish I could have held on to some of these things and kept them with me in every future house we'd live in.

I'd still rather live in my current house than this one. But before I get to that, let's enjoy the pleasant aspects...

Here is the old house. Look how proud Chris is. Our first place!

The kitchen was SO COOL! Check out that sink! The glass and open shelving cabinets had original latches from around 1920. I turned that little back corner area into a sitting nook. It should have been a dinette area, but we were still at that age where the kitchen was the "hang out" and not a place to sit down to family meals.

My style was "French Country Italian Shabby Chic Farmhouse Hand-me-downs" back then. With the occasional napkin covered cardboard box side table? Dear lord...tell me that was just temporary!

No dishwasher! No disposal. No PANTRY. Not a closet in the house except a tiny his and hers in our bedroom. And the house had about 1300 sq. feet!

 Sigh...Such a beauty of a sink though.

Boy this stove was an adventure! I had to light it myself, the oven too! I think it was from the 1950's if I recall.

Chris was such a trooper.

Funny side note: a standard cookie sheet did not fit into the oven.

It had lovely hardwood floors, chandeliers in 3 rooms, french doors, glass knobs, custom woodwork...subway tile...all of the charming features that I love in a house!

We never could get that black off!

It had a big front porch with a blue beaded board ceiling.

Out back were huge old oak trees and a garage with a tiny guest house.

Carport with beaded board...love those details!
However, our pick up truck could not fit into the car port. Built for a model "T" I guess!

Neither of us had ever "co-habitated" so starting a household together was very exciting for me. It felt like a huge domestic adventure...
And it WAS an adventure. This gorgeous 100 year old house was actually more like a big fat lesson. It taught me that a beauty queen may be great to look at. But you don't want to marry her and live with her forever...so high maintenance! LOL

This bathroom had so many random things. Like this old non working heater, the weird pull down cabinet doors, and the button on the wall. An old light switch I believe.

As lovely as the houses' features were, I couldn't wait to get out of it when I became pregnant with our first. Besides the perils of lead paint, the lack of insulation and the annoyance of antiquated or nonexistent appliances, there were critters galore...and I don't mean cute baby bunnies.

Happy Easter to you and Yours!

♥Linsey

..•.•.•..

p.s.For all you architectural historians out there... The house was built in the 1920's I believe. So not quite 100 years old, but it's PDO (pretty darn old)

Look away if you hate color!

What began as our transition to a king size bed ended with my need for all new bedding. King bedding...cha-ching!!!

The GOOD thing is that when you start with a blank white canvas, it's easy to change out the feel of a room without breaking the bank.

At about the same time that we bought the new frame and mattresses, I started yearning for some bright colors and more modern touches around the house. I've really been drawn to the "Modern Country" look lately, the mix of old and new...

Or the reinvention of old looks with a fresh ,updated look...

I hunted and hunted and HUNTED for bedding. I knew I wanted the look of a fresh, colorful, MODERN twist on a patchwork quilt. But everything I fell in love with was a small fortune, especially if I wanted shams.

I ended up settling on this set from Walmart.com. I can't believe I just admitted that! It's 100% cotton and the perfect weight for a Houston summer. It got rave reviews online and I agree with the acclaim...it's an amazingly pretty and high quality set. The shams even have tie backs, which I love. The entire set was 79.99. My sheets were more than that!

The colorful fabric on the accent pillow is 1960's vintage DuPont  I found a large scrap in a cute shop on my recent trip to new Hampshire.

It turns out that my Crepe Myrtle painting is perfect in here too!

Here's the tray that my butler lays on my lap as he serves my morning tea. :)

Found that little deer for 79 cents at Goodwill this morning! And the lamps were on clearance at Tar-jay this weekend. I did splurge on the shades ($30 each...that's a splurge for me!)

And there you have it! A colorful, fresh new summer space. My husband said "Wow, I love it!". Music to my ears!

Hope I didn't rock the boat to much for you, what with all these bright colors, my faithful friends. :D

p.s. White plates hanging next to the painting...yay or nay? Like, 3 and 3? Your thoughts?

Where are my shopping buddies?

Don't bother getting all dolled up. We're gonna do a little shopping  from the comfort of home. As I perused Etsy this morning while sipping my morning coffee I came across a few very cool items that I knew you'd love!

I'm fascinated by cross stitch jewelry! It's so warm and homey, it almost feels like home decor for your body. Haha  If I were a sewer I could totally see myself getting into this.

Thanks for going shopping with me! Most of the sellers on Etsy are what I call "Kitchen table Businesses". Mom's or young people working hard to try to compete with "big business". They make the stuff you WON'T find at (insert massive chain store name here). It's artsy and creative and totally unique!! Let's support them!

The sun is warm, the wind is crisp and cool. Sweet birds are singing and swooping all around with bits of straw and fluff in their beaks. The sunlight is lingering a bit longer each evening and greenery and flowers are popping up everywhere here in my neighborhood.

I've had the urge to fluff my nest this week as well.

My daughter is getting to the point in life where she needs a homework "desk". She doesn't handle distraction well, so sprawling out all over the kitchen to do homework isn't working for any of us anymore. She had been begging for a desk for her bedroom so I got her a really cute one recently for 12.99 and a $7 chair, with plans to paint it and change out the hardware.

It sat...

and sat...

and sat in the garage.

Hubby had had enough so we hauled it upstairs last night.

(Yes, I slide furniture around on blankets. You must try it! It cleans your floors at the same time! :D)

I was pretty excited about the change up because I got to swap it out with a piece of furniture that I adore. An old white dresser that had been converted into an open shelf piece, beautifully painted, distressed...and had bead board added to the inside. My girls have torn it up a bit (crayon scribbles all over the inside). My husband cut a huge uneven hole in the back for wires at one time when this was our TV stand. GRRR

So now it is in my room holding quilts. Where she belongs.

And one last thing to show you.

I recently found this vintage 1950's white linen frock.

Isn't is adorable? If my girls were still babies I could put them in it and get some great photos. Or hang it in their bedroom. :(

But they are growing up FAST. And the bedrooms that were once precious baby rooms must morph into "big girl rooms"

So I'll list it in my Etsy shop. There may be a Nana, Mimi, Mommy or Me-maw out there who has a little angel to wear it.
